This contemporary Zig-Zag Extension in Whitstable demonstrates how bold modern design can work sensitively within a Conservation Area. The extension, named for its distinctive angular roofline, reconfigures and extends the rear of a traditional home to create a dynamic addition that enhances space, light and connection to the garden.
Our role covered services up to RIBA Stage 4 (Technical Design). The client then managed the build independently, with our continued input at later stages to guide key design and construction decisions. Achieving Conservation Area Approval on the first application was a significant success, given the project’s contemporary character and challenging planning context. This outcome reflected our expertise, thorough pre-application advice and close negotiation with the planning authority.
Externally, the extension is clad in striking dark aluminium with a crisp zig-zag profile, contrasting against the original brickwork while remaining sympathetic to the Conservation Area. Inside, the space opens into a light-filled kitchen and dining room, with exposed brickwork, slate flooring and a dramatic rooflight bringing texture, warmth and daylight deep into the plan. Bifold doors provide a seamless link between indoors and the landscaped garden beyond.
This Whitstable Zig-Zag Extension highlights our ability to secure sensitive planning approvals in Conservation Areas while delivering imaginative, high-quality contemporary design that transforms everyday living.
