Heritage Renovation in Margate Old Town – Grade II Listed Coastal Home

Client
Private

Location
Margate, Kent

This exciting project in Margate Old Town involved the extensive renovation of a Grade II listed dwelling, once the former home of William Pitt the Younger - famously known as the youngest Prime Minister of the UK. Situated in the heart of Margate, the property is a significant piece of heritage, and the design process was carefully developed to preserve and reinstate its 19th-century character while adapting the building into a modern residential retreat by the sea.

The journey began with a meticulous measured survey and heritage appraisal, followed by a concept design process that explored spatial opportunities while respecting the listed fabric of the building. Particular focus was given to reinstating historic details, improving internal flow, and maximising natural light, all while ensuring the building could function as a comfortable contemporary home.

Listed Building Consent was achieved at first application, a testament to the strength of the design approach and the quality of the supporting documentation. Collaboration was key, with Studio Oram leading interior design and project management, and The House of Holmes delivering a high-quality finish that blended modern craftsmanship with sensitive heritage restoration.

This Margate Old Town renovation showcases how thoughtful architectural design can breathe new life into historic buildings, balancing conservation and modernisation to create a unique home rooted in its rich history.
